Talk | Cultural Appreciation or Cultural Appropriation, where to draw the line?

Lately, numerous fashion companies using traditional cultural elements have been called out and condemned by artisan communities and cultural organisations. But while plagiarism causes strong economic and cultural damages, cultural exchanges and mutual inspiration have always existed and should be encouraged. How can the natural fluidity of cultures benefit everyone equally? When does cultural appreciation become appropriation?

In this talk, TAEC researcher and curator Dr. Marie-Pierre Lissoir will approach the subtleties and extremes of the debate on cultural plagiarism, appreciation, and appropriation. The complex topic will be discussed through specific cases related to fashion and music, as well as examples encountered in our everyday lives.
