Kmhmu: Baskets and Back Strap Looms explores the versatility and beauty of bamboo basketry and woven textiles created on back strap or “body tension” looms.

Well known for their superior bamboo weaving skills, baskets are made for a variety of household and agricultural uses, including winnowing of rice, holding rice grains, sheathing knives, or catching fish. Made primarily from bamboo, rattan provides structure for the rims and frames. The Kmhmu exhibit features a kitchen re-creation for visitors to truly appreciate the complexity, plethora, and functionality of basketry in and outside of the home.
