The Phou Tai we work with live in Savannakhet Province in southern Laos, in communities famed for their matmee (more widely known as ikat, a resist-dye dyeing technique of yarns before weaving). Like the Tai Lue in northern Laos, the Phou Tai have a strong tradition of cotton production: growing, ginning, and spinning their own thread.
TAEC has been working with 15 weavers in this community since 2010, who make handwoven indigo ikat scarves, shawls, and bags for TAEC.
