ABOUT

The Tai Lao are the “majority” ethnic group of Laos, from where the country gets its name. However, they are only a slim majority, comprising 53% of the population, though their language and social practices are dominant in the country.

Lao people traditionally practise rice paddy farming and Buddhism, and often settle along rivers in lowland areas. Tai Lao women have traditionally woven cotton and silk using frame looms, creating sarong skirts, home textiles, and textiles for religious use and wear. At TAEC, we have soft Ikat scarves woven by Tai Lao women, coasters woven not from cotton but from the fibre of the mulberry plant, as well as an extensive collection of clay pottery from Ban Chan traditional pottery village.
