CHEEPHIEW

OMA TRADITIONAL JACKET

$800

This traditional long jacket (phyahahng phyahmawng in the Oma language) was made by Ms. Cheephiew, who was born in 1924 and passed away at the age of 69. She made this piece as a young married woman in the old village of Seng Kang Mai, which has since been largely abandoned by the residents, due to poor economic and agricultural opportunities. You can tell from the small size of this robe how tiny Ms. Cheephiew must have been — her granddaughter Aphou is selling the piece, as it is no longer getting any use. It features the handspun, handwoven, indigo-dyed cotton base with carefully appliqued motifs of thechechemah (trident shapes), hahphahlahphyu (frog’s hands), and numahchoewhawng ahjikheuphyah (bird’s feet and buffalo horn). Unusual yellow-dyed handspun cotton is used as a base for some of the applique work.
