LAOCHOUNG
OMA TRADITIONAL HEADWRAP
$550
This headscarf was given to Ms. Meetue Laochoung by her husband’s grandmother. As she already passed away, it is unknown when the piece was produced. However, the narrowness and quality of the handspun cotton base, and the handwoven, naturally dyed applique pieces, indicates that it is from the mid-twentieth century. It contains many handmade aspects that are no longer found today — multicoloured handwoven stripes, and narrow and sharp thechelahneu (finger) motifs. This style of motifs are no longer in fashion, and thus not often seen — replaced by brighter market-bought cloth patterns, in larger geometric patterns. The short length indicates that part of the cotton cloth was likely cut out for another use.
TAEC has partnered with the Oma community of Laos to share their material culture and textile arts with the world. Funds from this sale will be split evenly between the artisan, the Oma initiative to protect and promote their traditional designs, and TAEC.
