Ms. Van Laoly made this piece around 1990 when she was just 30 years old, approximately the same time as she made the other headwrap in this sale. This textile also features the narrow, handspun, handwoven local cotton that has been dyed with indigo, and the archetypal arrangemnent of applique and stitched tsawzah stripes, embroidered rectangles, applique thechechemah (trident) motifs, and chainstitch spirals. Ms. Laoly’s pieces are distinguished by her very careful, neat stitches and aesthetically complex execution.
