This tour of TAEC’s exhibitions by trained museum tour guides provides insight into Laos’ ethnic cultures, their traditions, and customs. This is a chance to learn more about Laos’ diverse ethnic groups.

Book a special tour from one of our Directors to learn from one of the creators of the museum’s exhibitions itself! The tours are led by either Khoun Soutthivilay or Tara Gujadhur who together founded TAEC in 2006 and have since guided the team, protecting the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Laos.

Led by Tara Gujadhur, co-director and Head Curator of our new exhibition “Claiming Inspiration”, who will guide visitors through the galleries, providing background on TAEC´s work in advocacy & IP rights. The experience includes time for Q&A and the opportunity to see and handle artefacts from the TAEC Collection.
handicraft workshops
Learn to make a handicraft from an ethnic artisan and take home your special creation! The workshops are taught by local Hmong and Kmhmu artists with a TAEC guide to translate and provide background on the craft and people.
Hmong Embroidery

Learn the art of counted cross-stitch embroidery from a Hmong artisan. Suitable for beginners as well as experienced embroiderers.
Kmhmu Bamboo Weaving

Make your own taleo and bamboo gift basket! Learn about the Kmhmu culture and bamboo weaving from a Kmhmu TAEC staff member.

Meet the Maker

Visit Mr. Neng Chue Vang, Hmong master instrument maker and musician, at his village workshop in Luang Prabang – approximately 20 minutes from TAEC.
A TAEC staff member will act as your driver and translator while you take in the sights and sounds of a makers workshop and village. Ask questions, take photographs, and appreciate generations of traditional craftsmanship. You’ll leave with a specially made musical instrument for your group. Truly a one-of-a-kind souvenir from Laos!

Ethnic Diversity and Cultural Change in Laos

This fascinating session gives background on Laos’ ethnic communities, their history, and their cultural practices, including livelihoods and crafts. Guests have an opportunity to learn about lifestyles in ethnic villages and are shown unique artefacts from TAEC’s collection that are not accessible to the general public. The seminars are led by one of the two TAEC Founder/Directors.
A Guide to Buying Ethnic Handicrafts in Luang Prabang
Maximum 12 people
Nowadays, the influx of imports to the Luang Prabang night market and other shops can be confusing for visitors – this presentation, led by one of TAEC’s senior staff members, leads guests through an overview of the ethnic diversity and traditional handicrafts of Laos, before helping them identify the differences between handmade and factory-made products by touching and examining real examples. This is an enjoyable way to learn about Laos’ ethnic groups and as preparation for shopping around Luang Prabang.
